the now generation

The NOW generation is the next generation of Chautauquans who make "giving back" part of their lives through a theme of leadership, friendship and philanthropy. This group is comprised of a cross section of young adults (from approximately 21 – 45 years of age) who find value and meaning in promoting the Chautauqua experience and are willing to devote their time, energy and resources in ensuring its longevity.
Objectives of NOW Generation Initiative
  • Involve young adults and their families in Chautauqua…from programming to philanthropy….and from the audience to the lecture platform
  • Create a network of young Chautauquans that are able to connect year-round and to more fully explore the texture and dimension Chautauqua adds to their lives
  • Provide opportunities to expand involvement in all aspects of Chautauqua
  • Encourage creativity and fresh ways of thinking and learning - and share knowledge of emerging issues and communities
  • Recognize, give voice to, engage in and learn from candid dialogue(s) with the younger generation
  • Provide an organic, grassroots component to philanthropy at Chautauqua that is both intimate and far-reaching
  • Be a resource for the alignment of young people’s personal values, social vision, educational pursuits and spiritual ideals with their financial resources to deepen their social and civic engagement
  • Prepare and empower young adults for leadership roles at Chautauqua
  • Create intimate and meaningful connections with the younger generation that will prove fruitful long-term for the longevity and vitality of Chautauqua (and ensure that it continues to be a relevant force in people’s lives

Members are culturally interested, active young leaders who support the Institution through philanthropic endeavors and volunteer activities designed to encourage a more vibrant, diverse and robust community. It is the intention of the NOW generation to not only build assets, but compassion, knowledge and fellowship as a community. This group also seeks to continue to improve its relationships with community leaders and leading community groups, so as to strengthen, and in some cases create, a network of mutually aligned organizations building a stronger Chautauqua.

Building upon the rich tradition of volunteerism at Chautauqua, members of the NOW generation may be called upon to serve in a capacity that best suits their desires and most closely aligns with their interests, skills and talents. Some of these capacities may include:

From time to time, there will be events outside Chautauqua’s nine-week season for NOW Generation members to learn about upcoming programming, forge leadership initiatives and build camaraderie with one another – all in a broad effort to further the culture of philanthropy and the idea of community responsibility among young Chautauquans.

The strength of the NOW generation lies in its members whose collective intelligence, wisdom and passion for excellence forms a vast network of peers to help each other become better informed leaders and engaged citizens both at Chautauqua and in their home communities.  Despite more than 130 years of adaptation to meet changing economic, social, political and technological realities, Chautauqua Institution, and members of its NOW generation, remain true to sharing their individual and collective resources to help one another learn and grow.

At the end of the day, the ultimate lesson learned from being a part of this group is the true value of spending time with people with whom you have a shared passion for a special place….a special idea.

WE ENCOURAGE ANYONE WHO HAS A PASSION TO GET INVOLVED
